THE ART OF BROOKLYN is a new festival that's all about New York artists; whether they’re born and raised in the 5 Boroughs or have moved here to live, work and create. Independent production company Park Slope Films is bringing together the indie film community, musicians, visual artists and local businesses to Founders Hall at St. Francis College in the heart of Downtown Brooklyn.

TAoB was launched to showcase what they do and celebrate the creative energy that makes our borough one of the most exciting places in the world.

Park Slope Films Goes Viral To Promote New Film

(BROOKLYN) The team at Park Slope Films are doing everything they can to generate buzz for their new project, "The Schenectady Package," a short comedy inspired by a classic Twilight Zone episode: "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street."

They've taken elements from the film and are creating an “expanded universe” through comedy videos and web content.

“We were looking for fun, new ways to promote the film” said Anthony DeVito, the comedy's co-writer and one of its stars. “The characters in this story are so sharp and funny. A pair of real estate agents figure heavily into the film’s plot, so we shot a commercial for them, like one you’d see on local cable… complete with awkward edits and cheesy copy. The video gives a sneak preview of several of the film's main characters."

PSF created a website for the agents’ “company” where you can see the ad. The links on that site point to the film’s official site, Facebook page and its fundraising page on Indie GoGo.

"We want to entertain viewers while reminding them they can donate to the film and help spread the word," said director Jason Cusato. "These characters are so much fun we want to show them off as much as we can."

Once the film has started shooting, the team has plans to write and shoot a "local news segment" featuring different characters from the film to use as a teaser trailer.

Park Slope Films is back with a new project. Following the success of their feature Apostles of Park Slope, the PSF team is hard at work writing, casting and prepping their next film, a short comedy called THE SCHENECTADY PACKAGE.

THE SCHENECTADY PACKAGE was inspired by a classic episode of the iconic television series The Twilight Zone. “The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street,” which originally aired in 1960, used Cold-War hysteria to tell a story of neighbors who turn on each other for no good reason.

Perfect material for a comedy. Well, a dark comedy. A very dark comedy.

Director Jason Cusato, actor Al Accettura and actor/writer Anthony DeVito have written a story that takes elements of fear, gentrification, greed, ignorance, bigotry, lunacy and mistrust and sets it on the mythical "Schenectady Street" in modern-day Brooklyn. And they've made it very funny.

THE SCHENECTADY PACKAGE features actors from APOSTLES: Anthony DeVito (CHIEF) Al Accettura (TINY), Michael Tadduni (FREDDY), Chris Harcum (MAGOO) and Nick Freni (FATHER PAUL) as well as several new faces. Shooting will begin in late Spring/early Summer 2011.

She doesn’t like Charlie or Bobby but sometimes jumps on board just to push people. Kelly is also overly happy all the time but can change to overly suspicious in a minute. She is very much in love with her husband of 23 years Claude. Claude is a tall black man. Early 50’s. Claude is extremely put off by most of the block, is also very much in love with his wife and very protective of her. Claude would rather keep his distance from everyone on the block but Kelly likes to keep up with the gossip and is always in the middle of everything. They have lived on the block a long time, almost as long as Pete. Good luck trying to win an argument when both are around.

The Manhattan Film Festival is a small festival in a large city, New York City. It's a modest event with some ambitious films. Without corporate sponsors, it screens low-budget films, yet low-budget films that can rock your socks! Such as Apostles of Park Slope.

The film's narrative is straightforward. A man that is too young loses his not-that-old mother. The neighborhood gang of guys rallies around their distraught buddy. He's taking it real hard. They organize a get-together at a local Italian restaurant for food but mostly drink. The local priest shows up, but he's in his own holy world. Slowly, as the night progresses, the mourner begins to come around.

The message of Apostles of Park Slope is simple: religion is not the key to making it through the hard times of life, although it might not hurt, in fact it might help, yet the real life savers are your friends. Yes, even if those friends are 12 foul-mouthed Brooklyn destroyers-of-the-English-language knuckle-headed Micks, Wops, and Polacks.

"During the film I want the audience to feel they are right there and a part of the dinner," blurts director Jason Cusato in rapid-fire machine gun nasal. After a short gasp for air: "When walking out of the theater I want them to feel the bond of friendship is the most important thing in life -- Hey, Tony! How yuz doin?"

This is an old story in the context of today: a close-knit community held together by individual ethnic identities with religion providing loose background support. Although the old Brooklyn neighborhoods are quickly disappearing -- the departed generally head to the bright lights of Manhattan or the green yards of suburbia Long Island -- the old tight-knit groups still hold some turf in Brooklyn. The old culture still retains the power to comfort. It still gives meaning to life. And when life is the most difficult, like when a mom dies, the old friends are the most important.

Based upon real events and real characters, Apostles of Park Slope is heart-wrenching, inspiring, funny and solemn. There is a relentless stream of surface conflict -- Brooklyn being the premier culture of conflict -- with crude putdowns and vulgar comebacks. Yet, wrapped inside this maniacal circus of flaming words, where in-your-face is the norm, are genuine feelings and steadfast loyalty. Yes, this is a guy's film.

"Yet, if you come across as real," Cusato insists, his mouth barely moving as words rip through his nose, "there is no girl/guy film. It doesn't exist if the film is viewed as real."

The strength of Apostles of Park Slope is it does come across as real. Not as in "reality" television, and not because audiences suspended their mechanisms of disbelief to believe what they are viewing is real. No, this real comes from the gut. From a meshing of what is on the screen with the audiences personal experiences and what they have learned about life -- or at least about Brooklyn, which is certainly not always the same as life.

The characters are distinct and believable, not Hollywood urban cut-outs, and the acting is strong, with most of the cast and crew from and/or residing in Brooklyn. Their speech is not prettified; the words are blowtorched through the nostrils with a vengeance. The setting is authentic, a restaurant on 3rd and Union in Park Slope. The film is about a particular place, not some "New York" shot in Toronto by people living in California speaking in a Mid-Western voice making it all palpable in Bombay, India. This is Brooklyn. And if you don't like Brooklyn, then go eat your popcorn at a mall multiplex with the rest of the sissies.

And the Q&A after the screening was also Brooklyn. Hands shot up as questions were screamed at the director and 12 actors on the stage. Jokes ripped through the audience; soon the Q&A had a parallel riot in the audience. The good guys with trash mouths were not only in the film. The women's hair resembled huge botanical gardens, bouncing up and down as they hurled verbal questions at the stage or at people sitting around them. It really didn't matter. The men had a particular fondness for scratching themselves and when speaking naming that part of their anatomy. If you censored their cuss words, they couldn't say anything.

This was not Cannes, where the men have slap-fests and the women lose their passports. And the after party at the 420 Amsterdam Bar and Lounge had not even begun. No doubt, this movie was going to run very long into the night. And it would probably take a month for my normal speech patterns to return.

There are film festivals that would not screen Apostles of Park Slope because it cuts too close to a reality that makes audiences feel uncomfortable -- well, at least that's what the festival honchos believe. Yet, what drives skyrocketing numbers of filmgoers to events like the Manhattan Film Festival are authentic films, independent films that sharply convey a reality of a particular place at a definite time, of a certain group of people. This film is not another anyplace at anytime meant to achieve the widest possible audience, which is often the most dumbed down and bored possible audience. Apostles of Park Slope zeros in on one chunk of reality, yet a reality with a universal message.

At the end of the film, the local priest who was relentlessly attempting to rebuild his dwindling congregation by getting the gang to attend mass, finally gets the message. Although friends are not higher than God, in this world friends are as important. It's a simple yet immensely important message. One for all of us, even for those who don't live in Brooklyn.

Manhattan Film Festival Announces ‘Apostles of Park Slope’ Will Headline First Round of 2010 Official Selections

NEW YORK, May 1, 2010 — Manhattan Film Festival (http://www.manhattanfilmfestival.org) has just unveiled their first round of official selections. The festival, formerly known as Independent Features, announced today 10 features and 48 short films headlined by Jason Cusato’s “Apostles of Park Slope.” The event will be hosted July 21-25 on the Upper West Side and out of the 58 films revealed today, 24 feature the work of New York filmmakers and 11 are international selections.

Cusato, who leads a list of 9 Brooklyn filmmakers, said, “The Manhattan Film Festival is a unique festival that goes above and beyond to make each filmmaker and their work feel special. We are excited and honored to be part of this year’s festival, especially opening night.” Cusato’s film “When Broomsticks Were King” was the first film the festival ever screened. Founder Philip J. Nelson said, “I believe Jason is the next great filmmaker to come out of New York and it’s only fitting he opens our first year as the Manhattan Film Festival.”

In January the festival legally became the Manhattan Film Festival. In one short year they have grown over 729% and are on track to become the largest independent film festival in New York City. While those facts are alone staggering, what is more impressive is they accomplished this without the benefit of a corporate sponsor. Their rise was not easy.

After hitting a brick wall in 2008 their chances to make it were slim to none. After a partner failed to perform they were left with an economic nightmare. Nelson had no way to support his family and his situation was dire. While cleaning out his office he noticed a content partnership agreement he was given. He thought of it as the only opportunity he had to get himself out of the mess that he was in. He started a vlog and 50 million views later he credits that partnership for saving his life. Little by little he started digging himself out of a seemingly insurmountable hole and their vision of creating a film festival that would level the playing field for independent filmmakers was still alive.

A year later, at a fundraiser for the “Apostles of Park Slope,” Nelson saw how Cusato brought his community together and was reminded of the true independent spirit. The festival has since reached out to local businesses to bring special screenings and festival events such as after-parties into the community. “Our goal is to bring local businesses added clientele, give attendees a unique festival experience, while creating a product equal to or greater than Hollywood on a shoestring budget,” said festival co-founder Jose Ruiz Jr. For more details or a list of official selections, please visit http://www.manhattanfilmfestival.org.

It will run from June 2-6th 2010, at the College of Staten Island.Screening dates have not been announced. we will send updates as soon as we know! Apsotles of Park Slope is making the rounds of film festivals this summer.

Breaking News: AoPS will headlining the Manhattan Film Festival! The MFF runs from July 21 - 25, and Apostles will be the first film to screen on opening night, complete with a red carpet even and a Q&A session after the film with director Jason Cusato and several of the film's actors. Save the date!
